L-aspartic acid is a nonessential amino acid. It is found in abundance in plant proteins but can be manufactured in the body from oxaloacedic acids. It is one of two acidic amino acids.
Aspartic acid and glutamic acid play important roles as general acids in enzyme active centers, as well as in maintaining the solubility and ionic character of proteins. Aspartic acid is used as a component of parenteral and enteral nutrition. In pharmaceutical agents aspartic acid is used as an ammoniac detoxicating agent, hepar function accelerator and fatigue refresher. Aspartic acid is also widely utilized for mineral supplementation in the form of its potassium, magnesium or calcium salts.
